Abstract

This monograph is an intuitively organized and authoritative quick reference guide to accurate information about ketamine used to treat canine and feline patients. It is presented as a single self-contained page that emphasizes the most clinically relevant details required by veterinary practitioners. The monograph focuses on the following information of ketamine: common brand names, category, available dosage forms in the United States, common indications, common dosage or dosage range for dogs and cats, administration/dispensing notes, mechanism of action, drug interactions, adverse effects, effects on lab test results, contraindications and cautions, client communications, and compounding notes. For each of these sections, the information provided is the most common and practical information. Adverse effects include respiratory depression; vomiting; salivation; vocalization; erratic and/or prolonged recovery; and spastic jerking movements, convulsions, and muscular tremors. The monograph is designed to provide a quick memory jolt or refresher on the medication.
