Abstract

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and evolving consumer behaviours, the retail landscape has undergone a profound transformation, primarily driven by digitalization. Digital platforms have emerged as the driving force behind this evolution, reshaping the way consumers interact with retail environments and how businesses operate within them, therewith redefining the roles of consumers, producers, and ownership. The increasing platformization is most evident through online marketplaces, including Alibaba, Amazon, and JD.com . Moreover, social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are gaining influence in the retail sector by transitioning from pure communication and entertainment platforms to distribution platforms, enabling more people to buy and sell from anywhere with an Internet connection. This chapter delves into the dynamic realm of digital platforms and their pivotal role in the process of retail digitalization. On one hand, it reveals how platforms, such as Amazon, have facilitated innovative forms of consumer engagement, offering personalized experiences, targeted recommendations, and seamless transactions, significantly contributing to the digitalization of the retail sector. On the other hand, the chapter discusses digital platforms' engagement with (potential) sellers, exemplified by Alibaba's Taobao Villages in China or Alibaba's commitment to Digital Trade Platforms in Thailand and Malaysia, as well as Digital Villages in Mexico. Furthermore, the chapter explores the evolving landscape of urban governance in response to retail digitalization, investigating the influence of digital platforms on local economies and urban planning. The chapter draws on examples from Alibaba, Amazon, eBay, and Google, which actively engage in digitalization processes. Against the backdrop of the increasing importance of e-commerce, accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the digitalization deficit among brick-and-mortar retailers in several countries, especially in the Global North, digitalization initiatives are emerging, supporting entrepreneurs' transition from brick-and-mortar stores to hybrid businesses. Last but not least, the chapter sheds light on the role of digital platforms in other elements within the retail industry, such as the digitization of warehouse management, supply chain management, marketing, and payment processing.
