Abstract

This chapter provides a how-to guide to taking ethnographic notes. Starting with a discussion of the fleeting nature of ethnographic data, it proceeds to offer guidance for when and how to record ethnographic information with an eye toward the type of detail that will lead to successful ethnographic analysis. Readers will be able to evaluate the use of different techniques for recording ethnographic notes and the possibilities of transcribing conversations as part of the ethnographic record.
