Abstract

In this chapter, the authors explore the important world of number systems, focusing on binary and other commonly used number systems in mathematics, cybersecurity, information systems, and computer science. They begin by defining a number system and expressing why it is crucial in these fields. The binary number system is a fundamental concept in cybersecurity and computer science. The authors explore the octal number system, also known as the base-8 numbering system, which is another positional number system used in computer science. They explore the hexadecimal number system, which is widely used in computer science and digital systems. The ternary number system, also known as the base-3 system, uses three distinct symbols to represent numbers: 0,1, and 2. The authors explore some of the key applications of number systems, starting with their significance in computer architecture. Floating-point representation allows for a wider range of values and higher precision compared to fixed-point representation.
