Mammary Gland Pathology
Abstract
Normal mammary gland function is essential for neonate survival and dairy production. This chapter provides an illustrated discussion of congenital and acquired disorders of the udder. Selection of animals without congenital defects, such as supernumerary teats, and with good mammary gland conformation is the first step to ensure a healthy udder. Specific disorders discussed include agalactia, galactorrhea, and mastitis. Galactorrhea is often seen in companion goats and may be associated with cystic ovarian disease or granulosa cell tumors. Mastitis is the most common disorder of the mammary gland. Mammary defense mechanisms, epidemiology, predisposing factors, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of subclinical and clinical mastitis are described in detail. Other disorders of the mammary glands, neoplasia, abscesses, and skin lesions are presented.
