Abstract

Electrochemical sensors based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have become a potent instrument in analytical chemistry, providing great sensitivity, selectivity, and adaptability for identifying a variety of analytes. Large surface area, biocompatibility, and simplicity of functionalization are some of the special qualities of MNPs that these sensors take advantage of to improve the efficiency of electrochemical detection systems. In this study, we investigate the synthesis, properties, and use of MNPs in the creation of sophisticated electrochemical sensors. Because of their unique properties (such as electroconductivity, biocompatibility, and ease of manufacture), various forms of iron MNPs have proven to be an excellent nanomaterial for electrochemical biosensing applications. Metal oxide and MNP-based electrochemical sensors have attracted a lot of interest because of their improved sensitivity, selectivity, and quick reaction times, which make them perfect for real-time monitoring of a variety of chemical and biological analytes. While MNPs provide the benefit of easy separation and functionalization, enhancing the sensor's operational stability, metal oxides, with their distinct redox characteristics, large surface areas, and catalytic activities, facilitate effective electron transfer. These nanomaterials enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensors, enabling the accurate detection of a variety of analytes, such as environmental pollutants, biomolecules, and heavy metals. In this chapter, the synthesis, functionalization, and electrochemical performance of sensors based on magnetic and metal oxide nanoparticles are investigated. MNP-based electrochemical sensors' excellent sensitivity and stability have drawn a lot of interest from the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. The numerous benefits that nanomaterial applications provide across a range of industries are generally acknowledged to be the reason why nanotechnology has garnered increased attention. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors based on nanomaterials have recently been presented by researchers as powerful substitutes or additional analytical tools for the time-consuming traditional detection processes.
