Abstract

The cosmetic industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability, focusing on natural, organic, and fermented products. Advanced biotechnology, especially fermentation science, plays a pivotal role in this shift by developing bio-ferments as alternatives to harsh chemicals. These bio-ferments contain bioactive compounds such as organic acids, amino acids, and peptides produced through probiotic-based natural substrate fermentations. Fermentation of unique plant materials unlocks innovative bioactive compounds that enhance personal health but also promote environmental conservation. Driven by rising consumer demand, the global cosmetic market is predicted to reach $760 billion by 2034, holding a 4.10% share of the probiotic cosmetics market, indicating a significant market gap. Similarly, the cosmetic raw material market is projected to reach $40 billion by 2032, holding a 2% share of the natural cosmetic raw material market, highlighting rising demand and market opportunities for both probiotic-based cosmetics and natural raw materials in the green cosmetic sector. Conventional probiotic-based cosmetic companies include microbial lysates and filtrates in their formulations, but they lack fermented bioactive compounds. This market gap can be filled by introducing innovative probiotic cosmetics with natural bio-fermented raw materials. The successful commercialization of bio-fermented raw materials and final formulations in the green cosmetics sector is very complex. It requires expertise in microbiology, research and development (R&D), fermentation processes, optimizations, biotechnology techniques, scale-up, downstream processing, formulations, analytical quantification, safety & efficacy studies, regulatory documentation, licensing, and marketing. European cosmetic companies are shifting to natural ingredient-based products. Standardization and regulation must keep pace with ongoing research to ensure the successful commercialization of these innovative ingredients.
