Abstract

This chapter covers cermet, sintered titanium carbonitride carbides, and titanium nitride. When exposed to aggressive, oxidizing, or abrasive environments, a special class of cermets known as TiN and TiCN compounds provides an exceptional combination of high-temperature resistance and hardness. Although TiN and TiCN coatings have several applications, the substrates on which they are applied influence their mechanical and tribological characteristics. The effectiveness of TiCN and TiN coatings on machined tool steel is the main focus of their work. The only innovation is the improvement of high stiffness at low hardness. Assessing improvements in hardness and toughness for use in cutting tools is critical to identifying trends and developments. In addition, it is expected that a very hard, binder-free TiCN phase will be required to overcome the disadvantages of using TiCN as a cutting tool at high temperatures.
