Abstract

Traditional grinding operations have replaced novel processes for turning hard components since introducing new ultra-cutting hard tool materials. Hard machining has significantly improved various machining operations, including milling, boring, broaching, hobbing, and others. Cutting performance is significantly impacted by coatings. The performance of cutting tools has gradually increased along with cutting technology through the development of thin layers that provide the properties required for each cutting condition. To increase wear resistance, the layer on the tool is crucial. A coating layer can be used to enhance the cutting tool's performance by either chemical or physical vapor deposition (PVD) comprised of titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbonitride (TiCN), and aluminum chromium nitride (AlCrN). The characteristics of PVD and CVD multilayer coatings are outlined in this work, together with additional research issues relating to tribological phenomena from the viewpoint of cutting tool technology.
