Abstract

Availability of fresh water is becoming more and more scarce as a result of population increase, industrialization, and globalization, which has prompted the development of alternate fresh water delivery methods. Membrane-mediated wastewater reclamation and other industrial separations, as well as brackish and seawater desalination are the methods which depends on nanofiltration technology. Despite this, membrane fouling has limited the use of these systems by lowering filtration efficiency. Membrane technology's efficiency is greatly decreased by the non-specific interaction between foulants and the membrane surface. Thus, the current chapter briefly discusses nanofiltration membranes, fouling and antifouling mechanisms, fouling factors, antifouling strategy, and various antifouling methods. The chapter is consistent with the findings and prospects of antifouling membranes.
