Advances in Nanostructured Materials and Liquid Crystal Composites
Abstract
In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive exploration of recent advancements in nanostructured materials doped liquid crystal composites, emphasizing their applications in displays. Beginning with a brief introduction, we systematically delve into the fundamentals of nanostructured materials, categorizing them into 0D, 1D, and 2D structures. Detailed discussions on fabrication techniques, including lithography, VLS/SLS, PVD, CVD, ALD, and self-assembly, establish a thorough foundation. The core of the chapter revolves around the interaction between nanostructures and liquid crystals. Various doping materials, such as titania, Au and Ag quantum dots, silicon dioxide quantum dots, and others, are examined in binary liquid crystal composites. The exploration extends to ternary composite materials, incorporating photochromic/photoresponsive polymers and chiral dopants for display applications. Beyond binary and ternary composites, we outline emerging trends and perspectives in this dynamic field, encompassing the intrinsic properties of liquid crystals, including their classes, phases, and principal characteristics. Pioneering advances in display technology are spotlighted, offering insights into innovative designs that enhance display performance. We conclude by laying the groundwork for future developments, emphasizing the potential for continued advancements in the synergy between nanostructured materials and liquid crystals for displays.
