Cermet
Abstract
Cermet, sintered titanium carbonitride carbides, and titanium nitride are covered in this chapter. A unique class of cermets known as TiN and TiCN compounds offers an excellent combination of high-temperature resistance and hardness when exposed to hostile, oxidizing, or abrasive conditions. TiN and TiCN coatings have a variety of uses, but their mechanical and tribological properties are dependent on the substrates they are put to. Their work focuses mostly on the performance of TiCN and TiN coatings on machined tool steel. The enhancement of high stiffness at low hardness is the only new development. Finding patterns and advancements in cutting tool technology requires evaluating gains in hardness and toughness. Furthermore, it is anticipated that to overcome, the extremely hard, binder-free TiCN phase will be needed the drawbacks of utilizing TiCN at high temperatures as a cutting tool.
