Abstract

Sustainable optical sensor platforms are gaining prominence for their ability to combine high analytical performance with reduced environmental impact. These sensors utilize green materials such as biodegradable polymers, bio-derived nanomaterials, and solvent-free formulations and employ eco-friendly fabrication techniques like additive manufacturing and green synthesis. Despite their promise, challenges remain in scalability, cost, long-term durability, and sensitivity compared to conventional systems. Integration with IoT networks also presents issues related to energy consumption and data security. Addressing these challenges through innovations in materials science, fabrication methods, and intelligent design strategies, including hybrid materials, AI-guided optimization, and energy-efficient systems, can significantly enhance sensor performance and adoption. Future directions point toward the development of robust, low-cost, and smart sensor platforms that support real-time monitoring while aligning with green chemistry principles. Embracing sustainable optical sensors will drive transformative progress in bioanalytical, environmental, and healthcare applications, contributing to a cleaner, smarter, and more responsible technological future.
