Abstract

Neuropsychology plays a vital role in the comprehensive management of epilepsy to address cognitive, emotional, and behavioural challenges. Many factors influence neuropsychological function in people with epilepsy, across the lifespan and the course of the condition. There is a need for early identification and intervention. Neuropsychological assessments integrate information from clinical interviews, psychometric testing and behavioural observations to aid diagnostic clarification and treatment planning. Neuropsychology has a critical role in epilepsy surgery, particularly in the prediction of and preparation for anticipated postoperative declines. The limitations of neuropsychological assessments include issues with validity, mood influences, cultural considerations and practice effects. Integrating neuropsychological input into epilepsy care is crucial for optimising outcomes and enhancing quality of life.
