Abstract

Sentiment analysis offers a powerful tool for addressing and overcoming mental health stigma by providing insights into public perception, tracking attitudinal changes over time, and guiding targeted interventions. This analytical approach allows for identifying prevalent misconceptions and negative beliefs that contribute to the stigma. Understanding these sentiments can guide efforts to correct misunderstandings and spread accurate information. By categorizing sentiments as positive, negative, or neutral, this method provides insights into public opinion, consumer behavior, and social trends. Sentiment analysis is mainly used in multiple fields, including marketing, customer service, and social media monitoring, to compute reactions to products, services, events, or issues. Its ability to process large volumes of text data quickly and efficiently makes it an essential tool for understanding the mood and perspectives of a target audience, enabling more informed decision making and strategic planning. Sentiment analysis allows organizations, researchers, and advocates to gauge public attitudes toward mental health issues. By computing large volumes of text data (such as social media posts, news articles, or forum discussions), it's possible to understand how people feel about mental health stigma—whether they view it positively, negatively, or neutrally. By enhancing communication strategies, sentiment analysis helps craft messages that resonate with diverse audiences, promoting more open dialogue and community building around mental health issues. Furthermore, it supports policy and advocacy by informing policymakers of public attitudes and evaluating the impact of new initiatives. As a research and educational tool, sentiment analysis contributes valuable data that can shape training programs and advance understanding in the field, ultimately fostering a more supportive and informed society regarding mental health. Mental health stigma remains a formidable barrier to seeking treatment, leading to social isolation and worsening health outcomes. This study investigates the potential of sentiment analysis—a natural language processing tool that interprets public opinion from text data—to combat this stigma. These insights enable the development of targeted intervention strategies, such as public health campaigns, educational initiatives, and policy reforms, all aimed at reshaping public discourse to foster a more supportive mental health environment. The research also assesses the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing stigma and enhancing mental health literacy over time. Through the integration of sentiment analysis in mental health advocacy, stakeholders can gain a deeper understanding of stigma's variations and dynamics, enabling them to implement more effective, data-driven measures to counteract it. This approach not only helps in mitigating the harmful effects of stigma but also promotes a culture of acceptance and support for individuals facing mental health challenges. Ultimately, this study underscores the transformative potential of sentiment analysis in the ongoing effort to reduce mental health stigma and improve the overall well-being of affected individuals. This chapter explores the insights, strategies, and impact of encountering mental health stigma through leveraging sentiment analysis. Additionally, it presents and briefly analyzes the challenges that sentiment analysis currently faces.
