Unconventional Forces
Abstract
Unconventional forces – including special operations units, militias, guerrillas, and mercenaries – offer strategic alternatives to conventional military operations, particularly for small-scale direct action and irregular warfare. These forces provide deniability and risk outsourcing. Direct action units, prized for stealth and precision, require extensive training and resources, limiting such elite capabilities to a few nations. Their missions target vulnerable assets far from front lines, using surprise and maneuverability. Irregular warfare, often the domain of non-state actors, focuses on controlling populations and can blur into criminal or terrorist activity. The organization, training, and reach of unconventional forces determine their operational impact and the complexity of countering them.
