Abstract

Hydrogen as fuel sustains the dream of a zero-emission, energy-efficient world. This amazing fuel is used as a source of clean power for the generation of energy, storage, and industrial activities. However, its use is affected by the economic conditions, the policies, technological development, and availability of resources. Countries such as Germany, Japan, and Australia have adopted the use of hydrogen in their renewable strategies, and India should also follow suit. Given that it has a high potential for solar and wind energy generation, India should adopt hydrogen as well, but it faces a major challenge of high production costs and an underdeveloped infrastructure. It also depends on gray hydrogen. However, with the National Hydrogen Mission, the country aims to reduce the costs and dependence on gray hydrogen through industry involvement, cost waivers, and subsidies. This study seeks to investigate the use of hydrogen through India's policies, strategies, technological development and capacity, and the world's recently developed hydrogen use policies and strategies. It also seeks to examine the challenges and the potential for hydrogen and establish whether it is a key to achieving net-zero emissions and the provision of unlimited clean energy.
