Abstract

Bushido (武士道), the way of the warrior, is a moral and ethical code that has shaped Japanese culture and leadership philosophy for centuries. Rooted in seven core precepts—Rectitude, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honour and Loyalty—Bushido provides a framework for ethical decision-making, resilience and integrity. These principles extend beyond historical samurai traditions and offer valuable insights for modern leadership and management. By embodying Rectitude, leaders prioritise justice and fairness in decision-making. Courage fosters boldness in innovation, while Benevolence encourages empathy and support for team members. Respect cultivates inclusivity, Honesty reinforces transparency, Honour upholds ethical standards, and Loyalty strengthens organisational commitment. Applying Bushido in contemporary leadership creates a culture of trust, accountability and purpose, allowing leaders to inspire and empower those around them. Integrating these virtues enables organisations to navigate challenges with resilience and ethical integrity, making Bushido a timeless guide for principled leadership in a complex world.
