Abstract

Shokunin katagi (職人気質), the ‘spirit of the craftsman’, represents the deep dedication, meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence in Japanese craftsmanship. Rooted in cultural heritage, this philosophy extends beyond technical skill, emphasising pride, responsibility, ethical integrity and continuous improvement. The traditional master-apprentice relationship ensures the transmission of these values across generations, fostering a culture of discipline and lifelong learning. The concept of Shu Ha Ri (守破離) encapsulates the journey of mastering a craft, progressing from strict adherence to tradition to eventual innovation and independence. While modern management often prioritises efficiency and standardisation, the principles of shokunin katagi remain relevant in leadership and talent development. By integrating these values, leaders can cultivate a culture of excellence, balancing tradition with innovation, fostering skill development and encouraging a mindset of continuous improvement. This philosophy serves as a timeless guide for enhancing leadership, organisational integrity and long-term success.
