IKIGAI
Abstract
Ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning ‘reason for being,’ represents a balance between personal fulfilment and social responsibility. Rooted in Shintoism and Buddhism, it integrates joy, duty and harmony in daily life. The M-IKIGAI™ framework extends this philosophy into leadership, incorporating passion, mission, profession, vocation and meaning to encourage purpose-driven leadership. Japanese leadership traditions, including the Bushido code and Nemawashi, emphasise integrity, long-term vision and community well-being. Leaders applying the M-IKIGAI™ framework cultivate humility, resilience and service-oriented values, ensuring alignment with both personal purpose and collective needs. The model provides structured reflection and goal-setting strategies to integrate Ikigai principles into leadership practices. Drawing on traditional Japanese wisdom such as Naikan (self-reflection) and Kintsugi (embracing resilience), the framework encourages leaders to foster trust, social responsibility and sustainable impact. By embedding Ikigai in leadership, individuals can achieve both personal fulfilment and meaningful contributions to society.
