Abstract

The Hwarang, an elite warrior group from Korea's Silla Kingdom, exemplified a leadership model that integrated martial skill with ethical, cultural and spiritual development. Unlike contemporary leadership paradigms that emphasise technical expertise and individual achievement, the Hwarang approach was rooted in character, relational harmony and collective well-being. Their training fostered courage, compassion and justice, demonstrating that leadership is not just about what one can do but who one is. This contrasts with modern hyper-individualistic leadership training, which often separates skills from character. Inspired by East Asian traditions, the Hwarang model positions leaders within a network of relationships, emphasising stewardship and shared responsibility. By prioritising character development, leaders can cultivate environments where resilience and success emerge collectively. Reimagining leadership through the lens of the Hwarang offers a path centred on connection, values and holistic growth, presenting a compelling alternative to dominant leadership narratives focused solely on performance and metrics.
