Abstract

The Igbo leadership model is deeply rooted in communal responsibility and mentorship, emphasising shared growth over individual success. Central to this model is the umunna, an extended family structure that fosters collective well-being, and the Igba boi apprenticeship system, where young individuals learn not just a trade but also values of integrity, hard work and giving back. Upon completing their apprenticeship, they are supported in establishing their own enterprises, ensuring the cycle of leadership and prosperity continues. This model reflects principles of long-term vision, mutual responsibility and ethical leadership. Stories from Igbo culture, such as the legend of Eze Nri and the success of Chukwuemeka, reinforce the idea that leadership is about empowering others. Modern leaders can apply these lessons by incorporating purposeful mentorship, fostering collective success and leading with integrity. The Igbo approach offers a powerful blueprint for leadership that prioritises community upliftment and sustainable development.
