Abstract

Princess Kundavai of the Chola dynasty exemplifies a leadership style that prioritises influence over direct authority, collaboration over competition and long-term strategic thinking over immediate gains. Unlike the dominant Western hierarchical models that often emphasise visibility and assertiveness, Kundavai wielded soft power, guiding her empire through diplomacy, wisdom and relationship-building. Her leadership was rooted in deep cultural understanding, working within existing structures to bring about meaningful change rather than imposing forceful reforms. She played a pivotal role in stabilising the kingdom, ensuring its prosperity and mentoring her brother, Raja Raja Chola I. Her approach to leadership challenges contemporary notions of power, demonstrating that effective leadership does not always require a title or public recognition. Kundavai's emphasis on wisdom, inclusivity and behind-the-scenes influence offers valuable insights for modern leaders navigating complex, globalised environments. By embracing her principles, organisations can cultivate resilient, innovative and collaborative leadership models that endure beyond immediate success.
