Abstract

Proverbs have long served as a means to transmit wisdom and cultural values across generations, encapsulating complex ideas in simple yet profound phrases. Among the Lhomwe ethnic group in Malawi, proverbs offer insights into leadership, guiding individuals in their professional and personal development. This chapter explores four Lhomwe proverbs and their relevance to leadership. The first emphasises the power of words, urging leaders to communicate with respect, inclusivity and balance. The second highlights humility, reminding leaders that those in lower positions today may play crucial roles in the future. The third warns against recklessness, advocating for calculated risks and ethical decision-making. The fourth advises measured responses to challenges, discouraging overreaction and promoting conflict resolution. These proverbs collectively reinforce the importance of wisdom, ethical leadership and interpersonal awareness. By integrating these lessons into modern leadership practices, individuals can cultivate more thoughtful, resilient and effective leadership styles.
