Yoruba Leadership
Abstract
The Yoruba people of Nigeria, Benin and Togo have long upheld a leadership philosophy rooted in community, sustainability and moral integrity. Their approach to governance prioritises collective well-being over individual gain, with a strong emphasis on accountability, transparency, justice and equitable resource management. At the heart of Yoruba belief is the concept of Ori, which underscores purpose, self-determination and the alignment of character with destiny. Leadership is viewed as a service to the community, requiring both knowledge and ethical responsibility. The Yoruba worldview also embraces ecological intelligence, recognising the interdependence of humans and nature, and advocating for environmental respect. Education extends beyond technical skills to include wisdom, moral values and social harmony, ensuring that leaders make decisions in the best interest of all. This leadership model offers valuable lessons for contemporary governance, emphasising inclusivity, ethical decision-making and long-term sustainability in both social and environmental contexts.
