Abstract

The Ancestral Mandate challenges mainstream leadership paradigms by asserting an Indigenous leadership model rooted in respect, relational knowledge exchange and cultural integrity. Unlike the standardised leadership frameworks prevalent in Western education, Indigenous leadership is shaped by an ancient intellectual lineage that prioritises intergenerational learning and collective responsibility. The Aboriginal principles of ‘Respect’, ‘Proper Way’ and ‘Both Ways’ form the foundation of this approach, ensuring that leadership development does not become another colonial tool. The Executive Indigenous Leadership Program (EILP) at the University of New South Wales exemplifies this philosophy by integrating Indigenous knowledge with Western frameworks, empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders to navigate both worlds. By equipping participants with the tools to challenge systemic barriers while maintaining cultural sovereignty, this model fosters leaders who are deeply connected to their ancestral responsibility. This work is not just about leadership—it is about the liberation and full emancipation of Indigenous peoples.
