First Nation Approaches to Leadership
Abstract
This chapter explores First Nations approaches to leadership, emphasising relational, community-driven and holistic perspectives. It contrasts Indigenous leadership principles with Western frameworks, highlighting the significance of kinship, storytelling and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Central to First Nations leadership is the balance between individual responsibility and collective well-being, fostering sustainability and ethical governance. The chapter also examines the impact of colonial legacies on Indigenous leadership structures and the ongoing efforts to reclaim and revitalise traditional practices. Through case studies and reflective analysis, it demonstrates how Indigenous leadership can offer valuable insights into contemporary leadership challenges, particularly in fostering inclusivity, sustainability and ethical decision-making. The discussion underscores the need for greater recognition of Indigenous epistemologies within mainstream leadership development, advocating for a decolonial shift in leadership education and practice. Ultimately, the chapter calls for a reimagining of leadership that integrates Indigenous wisdom with contemporary organisational contexts.
