Abstract

Kaizen, a Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement, emphasises small, incremental changes to enhance efficiency, quality and productivity. Rooted in Japanese corporate culture, Kaizen engages employees at all levels, fostering a mindset of constant refinement. The chapter explores core Kaizen principles, including customer value creation, flow efficiency, workplace organisation (5S) and structured problem-solving cycles such as Plan-Do-Check-Act and Standardise-Do-Check-Act (SDCA). Leadership plays a crucial role by encouraging employee participation, conducting Gemba walks to observe processes firsthand and standardising best practices. Kaizen's emphasis on empowerment, cost reduction and adaptability makes it a valuable approach for organisations aiming for sustainable growth. Its influence extends beyond operational management, offering insights into leadership development and coaching by fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning. The chapter concludes by positioning Kaizen as a strategic tool for leaders seeking long-term improvement and innovation in dynamic business environments.
