Abstract

This chapter examines eternal architectural theme—universality—revealing how enduring values shape the practice of building and the meaning of space. It emphasizes the necessity of cultural reflection and philosophical grounding in architectural practice. All creative work, including architecture, requires a degree of individual surrender, of depersonalization, if one is to achieve greater universality. The chapter presents the connection between a poet (T.S. Eliot), a philosopher (Ortega), and an architect (Sota), and shows what has T.S. Eliot to do with Ortega y Gasset, and with Alejandro de la Sota. It aims to link diverse cultural and geographical traditions in European architecture. The chapter also includes meditations that transcend architectural trends, focusing instead on timeless values. It finally presents beautiful full-color imagery that complements and deepens the architectural theme.
