Synergies of 6G and IoT
Abstract
This chapter presents a comprehensive perspective on the coevolution of sixth generation (6G) and the Internet of Things (IoT), emphasizing a layered architectural approach and the importance of secure, sustainable integration. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) architectures have revitalized the adaptability of communication environments by enhancing energy efficiency and spectrum utilization. As 6G moves from vision to reality, RIS will play a fundamental and transformative role in enabling intelligent and ubiquitous wireless communication. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) serve as critical convergence points for multiple 6G enablers, delivering exceptional capacity, spectral efficiency, user connectivity, and support for cell-free architectures and AI-driven network management. The chapter outlines key requirements for integrating IoT within 6G, addressing technologies such as AI, blockchain, edge computing, and green networking, all crucial for designing secure and sustainable IoT ecosystems. In the context of network architecture and management, the chapter discusses advanced concepts like network slicing, quality of service (QoS) for 6G-enabled IoT, edge intelligence (EI), federated learning (FL), and AI-native network automation protocols. It also explores transformative use cases—including smart healthcare and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), autonomous vehicles and V2X communication, Industry 4.0 and robotics, smart cities and environmental sustainability, and remote connectivity via satellites and UAVs—demonstrating how 6G-IoT synergy can enhance quality of life, redefine industrial practices, and support global sustainability goals. Addressing the complex threat landscape of 6G-IoT networks, the chapter emphasizes the need for an autonomous, multilayered, and proactive security framework that includes continuous monitoring, secure-by-design systems, and collaborative risk management. Key solutions discussed include AI-powered intrusion detection, blockchain for trust and data integrity, and privacy-by-design principles in 6G-enabled IoT. Finally, the chapter examines the broader economic, market, and ecosystem implications of this technological convergence, along with its societal impacts and ethical considerations, offering a holistic view of the 6G-IoT future.
