Feasible and Cost‐Effective Approaches for the Conversion of Biomass Wastes into Value‐Added Products
Abstract
Global population explosion and evolving living standards are a threat to resource depletion and surges waste generation. In addition with the industrial revolution, tons of organic waste and harmful environmental pollutants were generated in every corner of the world. This has led to climate change and global warming. Upon accumulation, biomass waste, being rich in moisture and nutrients, decompose, providing a breeding ground for disease-causing organisms and contributing to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, unplanned use of forest resources, ongoing deforestation, and unsustainable logging practices for energy production undermine the benefits of carbon sequestration and lead to biodiversity loss. Agriculture produces a vast amount of crop residue, husks, and stems, making it the largest contributor of biomass. Expanded population and modern living standards continuously generates waste including food waste, biodegradable municipal waste along with animal wastes. Growing industries also contribute processing waste, mill residues, industrial effluents etc. The rising global demand for energy, coupled with the increasing burden of waste, necessitates innovative solutions. Biomass valorization offers a promising approach to addressing both these challenges. By capitalizing on waste and converting it into high-quality end products, biomass valorization provides an opportunity to explore greener resources for generating fuel and bioproducts. This approach reduces the need for continuous pulling out of natural resources and helps mitigate environmental degradation. Waste management techniques that focus on biomass valorization create new ventures and economic opportunities. These carbon-neutral innovations serve dual purposes: they harvest energy and bioproducts from waste while also preserving natural reserve and ecosystems. This shift towards a conscious circular economy is essential for sustainable development. Each type of waste has its own potential applications as a resource for bioenergy and bioproducts, making it crucial to develop sustainable scientific strategies for utilizing this heterogeneous waste. The economic feasibility and sustainability of biomass valorization practices depend on optimizing energy and material consumption throughout the entire value chain. This includes everything from biomass plantation to the final product yield. Key aspects of this approach involve sustainable biomass harvesting, efficient conversion processes, integrated platforms, and optimized supply chains for both biomass and end products. A sustainable biomass valorization strategy includes using advanced technologies and methods that maximize the efficiency of biomass conversion processes and minimize accompanying waste. The transition to biomass valorization requires a concerted effort from various stakeholders, including governments, industries, and communities. Policy frameworks and public awareness and education can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable biomass utilization initiatives. Collaborative efforts are essential to develop and implement effective biomass valorization strategies that can meet the dual goals of energy security and environmental preservation. This literature essentially looks at the present and future potential of biomass wastes, considering their suitability for use as raw materials in producing biomaterials, fuels, and other products through valorization technologies, as well as their economic feasibility and scalability as innovative industry opportunity.
