Transgenic Plants for Agricultural Productivity
Abstract
Biotechnology and genetic engineering played a crucial role in tackling global food security concerns such as climate change, population expansion, and resource scarcity. This chapter describes how modern biotechnological tools such as CRISPR/Cas9, base editing, prime editing, and synthetic biology have transformed crop improvement, allowing for the generation of climate-resilient, nutrient-rich, and pest-resistant crops. Traditional breeding methods are contrasted with modern genetic transformation techniques such as Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, particle bombardment, and advanced CRISPR-based systems (Cas12, Cas13, and dCas9 epigenome editing). Key innovations like speed breeding, synthetic biology, and RNA-guided DNA insertion systems (e.g., PASTE) are highlighted as drivers of next-generation crop development. The commercialization of Bt cotton and Golden Rice, as well as the regulatory approval of gene-edited tomatoes and drought-tolerant maize, are all significant breakthroughs. The advances in traditional breeding, precise gene editing, and RNA-guided DNA insertion (PASTE system), as well as approaches like speed breeding integration and epigenome editing, have also been discussed. Applications for increasing biotic and abiotic stress resistance, boosting nutritional profiles, and enabling sustainable farming practices are thoroughly covered. Moreover, biosafety concerns, public perception, and global regulatory frameworks, while emphasizing the socioeconomic and environmental benefits of transgenic crops, have been highlighted. It concludes by advocating for global collaboration, inclusive policies, and education to realize the full potential of next-generation biotech crops in sustainable agriculture.
