Abstract

The rapidly evolving character of engineering in the information era, particularly with the expanding influence of artificial intelligence (AI), makes any conclusion inherently temporary. This book is intended to be an introduction, not a comprehensive treatment of engineering in the information era. The engineering framework demonstrates how seemingly discrete elements are categorized by functional purpose to address the inherent complexity of modern engineering practice. The strategic categorization reflects deeper organizational principles that enhance engineering effectiveness through systematic integration, as illustrated in the Engineering Framework Summary by Functional Categories. The framework recognizes that breakthrough AI capabilities emerge from interdisciplinary collaboration rather than domain-specific expertise alone. As engineering enters the Age of Intelligence, the synthesis of algorithmic capability with physical craftsmanship will define the next generation of innovators.
