Abstract

This chapter examines the hazards of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), focusing on risk recognition and prevention. It highlights the use of hazard identification systems such as CAS and UN numbering, with the UN 1053 code specifically for H 2 S. The chapter discusses the importance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in providing critical information on H 2 S, including its properties, hazards, and safety measures. It underscores the severe risks H 2 S poses in confined spaces, particularly in industries like sanitation, oil, and gas, where numerous fatalities have been reported. The chapter provides statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) to illustrate the ongoing threat of H 2 S poisoning, with recent incidents in the Permian Basin and a Pemex facility in Texas. It concludes by emphasizing the necessity of awareness and preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with H 2 S exposure.
