Abstract

Data is the lifeblood of modern organizations, and in the cloud, it moves fast, lives in many places, and is more vulnerable than ever. This chapter provides a comprehensive roadmap for securing data at every stage—from classification and encryption to storage, access, backup, and deletion. Readers will learn how to properly label and inventory their data assets, enabling the application of the right controls based on sensitivity, compliance needs, and business context. The chapter explores encryption in transit, at rest, and in use, as well as advanced topics like key management systems, hardware security modules (HSMs), and escrow strategies. It also tackles real-world data challenges, such as complying with residency laws, implementing data loss prevention (DLP) tools, and ensuring disaster recovery preparedness. Readers will gain insight into lifecycle security, access logging, anomaly detection, and leak surface reduction, understanding how to weave continuous protection into data's journey across clouds. By the end, they'll be equipped with the practices and mindset needed to protect data integrity, confidentiality, and availability in a decentralized, fast-moving world.
