Abstract

Secrets are everywhere in the cloud—and mishandling them is one of the fastest paths to compromise. This chapter explains the lifecycle of secrets like API keys, tokens, certificates, and encryption keys, and shows readers how to secure them from creation to revocation. It introduces centralized vaulting solutions, secrets rotation policies, and secure injection strategies that eliminate hardcoded credentials and reduce exposure in dynamic environments such as serverless functions, containers, and automation pipelines. Beyond basic storage and access, the chapter explores advanced topics including just-in-time access, privileged credential minimization, secrets scanning in CI/CD, and automation for secrets lifecycle management at scale. Readers will also be introduced to emerging trends like confidential computing and post-quantum cryptographic protections, helping them with future-proof secrets against evolving threats. By the end, readers will see secrets not as isolated risks but as high-value assets that require continuous governance, real-time monitoring, and secure handling practices across all layers of cloud operations.
