Abstract

Even in a borderless cloud world, the network remains a critical control point. This chapter delivers a detailed exploration of cloud networking fundamentals, from Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) design and subnetting to routing tables and security groups. Readers will learn how to architect secure, segmented networks that minimize exposure, restrict lateral movement, and enforce least-privilege communication between services, workloads, and environments. The chapter also dives into the practical configuration of cloud-native firewalls, Web application firewalls (WAFs), and API gateway protections. Techniques for securing hybrid connectivity, remote access, and network logging are explained, along with strategies for encrypted traffic inspection and anomaly detection. Readers will gain an understanding of how to implement Zero-Trust principles at the network layer and how to apply scalable protections to edge services and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) defenses. This chapter equips practitioners to maintain visibility, enforce policy, and respond quickly across increasingly dynamic, distributed, and hybrid cloud environments.
