Abstract

As organizations expand across multiple cloud providers, identity management becomes exponentially more complex—and more critical. This chapter explores the architecture and protocols behind identity federation, including Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), OAuth, and OpenID Connect (OIDC). Readers will learn how to establish cross-domain trust, enable secure single sign-on (SSO), and reduce credential sprawl through centralized identity provider (IdP) models that scale across platforms. The narrative covers best practices for securing federated sessions, designing scalable SSO flows, managing tokens, and integrating governance into federated environments. It also addresses common pitfalls in multicloud federation, such as inconsistent role mapping, poor session hygiene, or metadata misconfiguration. Readers will explore the future of identity federation through emerging concepts like decentralized identity, real-time trust scoring, and Zero-Trust alignment. This chapter gives organizations the tools and understanding to simplify access without sacrificing control, enabling secure authentication and seamless user experiences across complex cloud ecosystems.
