Abstract

Visibility is the foundation of cloud security—and this chapter shows readers how to achieve it. It begins with observability principles and logging strategies for ephemeral, multicloud environments, guiding readers through data collection, normalization, and secure storage. Key telemetry sources—such as API calls, access logs, network flows, and system metrics—are unpacked and placed within the context of real-time monitoring and long-term forensics. From there, the chapter explores detection methodologies, including behavioral analytics, threat intelligence integration, and anomaly detection systems tailored to cloud workloads. Readers will also learn how to build effective alerting systems, tune rulesets to reduce false positives, and implement automated escalation through security information and event management (SIEM) and security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) platforms. Coverage includes detection maturity models, cross-cloud correlation, and best practices for retaining, auditing, and visualizing telemetry data. This chapter equips readers with the skills to transform raw data into timely, actionable insight—and ultimately, more resilient cloud operations.
