Abstract

Quantum computing threatens to break the cryptographic foundations that secure today's cloud. This forward-looking chapter prepares readers for the quantum transition by introducing quantum principles like superposition, entanglement, and the implications of Shor's and Grover's algorithms. It explains how widely used encryption methods—RSA, elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), and some symmetric schemes—will become vulnerable, and why data harvested now could be decrypted later unless proactive steps are taken. The chapter outlines strategies for quantum resilience, including post-quantum cryptography (PQC), hybrid encryption models, and cryptographic agility for swap-in transitions. It also introduces quantum key distribution (QKD) and its early use cases for secure communication. Readers will learn how to inventory at-risk assets, assess exposure timelines, and align with evolving standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and global regulators. Long-term planning, crypto-governance, and risk acceptance frameworks are explored, ensuring organizations don't get caught unprepared. By the end, readers will be equipped to begin the years-long transition toward quantum-safe cloud architectures while continuing to meet today's operational needs.
