Abstract

As the cloud extends to the edge, the attack surface expands dramatically. This chapter addresses the unique security demands of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and edge computing architectures integrated with cloud platforms. Readers will explore how limited device capabilities, physical access risks, and connectivity constraints challenge conventional controls—and how secure device identity, lifecycle management, and firmware validation form the bedrock of IoT security. The chapter also discusses how to secure data flows from edge to cloud, including encryption, secure tunneling, and access policy enforcement. Topics such as real-time telemetry monitoring, lightweight anomaly detection, and remote diagnostics are covered, along with regulatory considerations for distributed data processing. Readers will gain insight into protecting IoT software supply chains, ensuring compliance across geographically dispersed assets, and integrating governance through cloud-native tools. By the end, they'll understand how to build an edge-to-cloud security model that is scalable, automated, and resilient—whether managing smart sensors, industrial controls, or mobile edge compute nodes.
