Abstract

Weight loss can happen for a variety of reasons, such as lengthy hospitalizations, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, poor nutrition, and physical de-conditioning. Pathological weight loss of primarily skeletal muscle mass, termed cachexia, is a particularly concerning type of weight loss that is an independent predictor of mortality. This chapter will discuss healthy weight gain, particularly through gaining muscle mass, and how to manage other side effects that interfere with adequate food intake, such as loss of taste or nausea.
