Membrane Structure Characterization
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the characterization techniques used to analyze membrane structure, which are essential for understanding and optimizing membrane performance. Various methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), are discussed in terms of their principles, capabilities, and limitations. These techniques enable detailed investigation of membrane morphology, pore structure, surface roughness, crystallinity, and chemical composition. Emphasis is placed on the importance of selecting appropriate methods based on the membrane type and target properties. Additionally, the chapter highlights emerging trends in characterization, such as high spatial resolution and low probing depth, which are critical for capturing nanoscale features and interfacial properties. By advancing structural characterization techniques, researchers can gain more profound insights into membrane behavior, leading to improved design and performance for various separation applications.
