Abstract

Membrane technology for environmental remediation: from principles to applied solutions" examines the intricacies of membrane science, exploring its underlying principles and its potential applications in environmental remediation.Throughout this book, we've unraveled the complexities of membranes, which serve as selective barriers in various natural and engineered systems. From the molecular structure of lipid bilayers to the sophisticated functionalities of biomimetic membranes, understanding the language of membranes is essential for harnessing their full potential in addressing environmental challenges. In our exploration, we've uncovered the fundamental principles governing membrane transport phenomena, including diffusion, osmosis, and selectivity. These principles underpin the design and optimization of membrane-based technologies for environmental remediation.Membrane processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), and membrane distillation offer efficient solutions for water purification, wastewater treatment, and pollutant removal.By leveraging the unique properties of membranes, we can mitigate pollution, conserve resources, and safeguard ecosystems. In Chapters 1-7, we thoroughly examined the pivotal role of membrane technology in environmental remediation, particularly in water purification, wastewater treatment, and contaminant removal. This technology stands out due to its high separation efficiency, selective contaminant targeting, and lower energy consumption compared to conventional methods. Its ability to remove bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and organic pollutants makes it invaluable for desalination, industrial wastewater treatment, and producing safe drinking water.Furthermore, the modular design of membrane systems ensures scalability and adaptability to diverse environmental needs. However, membrane technology is not without limitations.Membrane fouling remains a significant challenge, leading to reduced efficiency, increased maintenance expenses, and shorter operational lifespans.
