Ethical Challenges and Guidelines for AI Deployment in Healthcare
Abstract
The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) transforms healthcare by improving diagnostics, optimizing treatment plans, and enhancing patient outcomes. Machine learning and AI offer immense possibilities in medicine; however, issues of social importance arise concerning the safety, privacy, and autonomy of patients. The first half of the chapter presents fundamental ethical principles that need to be considered while developing and implementing AI solutions in medicine. These principles are healthcare efficacy, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and distributive justice. Another focus of the paper is on particular ethical issues that arise with AI applications in urology and gastroenterology. These include concerns of confidentiality and data safety, fairness, and bias in AI algorithms and the application of AI in clinical settings. There exist some minimal ethical standards to follow while applying AI in gastroenterology and urology. These include varying degrees of responsibility and illustrative examples demonstrating the role of AI in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer in urology and in identifying pathologies in gastroenterology. Adhering to ethical and moral standards helps harness the potential of AI technologies with minimum risks to patients. This approach will eventually enhance the quality of care provided to patients in the fields of urology and gastroenterology.
