Abstract

The integration of genomics with artificial intelligence has transformed the field of precision medicine and improved healthcare systems on multiple levels. The discovery and validation of biomarkers has been renewed due to the use of AI-based techniques, leading to improved diagnostics, treatment, and outcomes. Biomarkers, which are measurable indicators of biological processes, help in understanding the mechanisms of diseases, their progression, and how patients respond to therapy. Some AI technologies like machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are being used more for the analysis of increasingly large biological genomic datasets, as well as transcriptomic, proteomic, and clinical datasets. Thus, novel biomarkers can be identified for a wide range of diseases, from cancers to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. The complex and voluminous biomolecular data requires AI models that can learn to identify and process it. Hidden within these large datasets are associations that may go unnoticed without the application of advanced analytical tools. AI has further streamlined the process of discovering new biomarkers by synthesizing various data types, which gives insight into disease processes at the molecular scale and improves predictive accuracy. AI helps streamline processes that are normally time-consuming and expensive, which helps in the faster translation of research into clinical practice. AI has played a key role in the advancement of sequencing technologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), which produces vast amounts of data. AI assists in variant calling and pathway analysis and even in predicting how an individual's genes will tailor treatments to him or her. Also, developing therapies to fit an individual's genetic and biochemical makeup using AI's predictive capabilities marks a noteworthy milestone in the progression of personalized medicine.
