Overview of AI and Machine Learning Algorithms in Health Monitoring
Abstract
Medical dermatologists are assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools in the contouring examination of photographs and skin lesions, which helps in quick diagnosis of the skin diseases. These algorithms can automatically classify images of skin lesions according to their morphologic features, recommendation of the appropriate treatment, or a monitoring plan. Also, newer devices with AI capabilities are being designed to monitor skin lesions for a disabled patient in their home. Such devices will enable patients monitor changes on their skin overtime for early medical intervention. In the area of infectious diseases, AI and ML algorithms assist in the early detection and surveillance of COVID-19, malaria, and tuberculosis. Such diseases can be diagnosed accurately using clinical data, laboratory, and imaging studies because the clinical signs are very subtle. This will enable the physician to treat the patient at the earliest stage, thus preventing further spread of the infection. This will enable the ongoing surveillance and early outbreak detection. These new developments enable the detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of a multitude of health conditions, which for the patient is beneficial as well as the healthcare system.
