Bias Mitigation and Fairness in AI Healthcare Applications
Abstract
As AI innovations develop, new concerns arise. Ethics is at the top of the list. Special considerations are mandatory when automating any technology used in healthcare. In this paper, I explore algorithmic bias concerns in AI use in healthcare, offering suggestions. These applications may surely assist in diagnosis and enhance patient healthcare delivery and patient satisfaction; flawed applications, however, could lead to unjustified discrimination. There are numerous discriminatory biases that can be associated with algorithmic bias, like unbalanced training data, incorrect algorithms, and social biases in healthcare. There has to be a complete strategy tackling these concerns. That approach should involve comprehensive classified representative samples for training, verifiable algorithms, and regular audits of predetermined bias adjudication. It is constructive and less harmful when fairness checks are embedded in the design phase. In AI, fairness means more than the removal of discrimination based on attributes; it is the disabling of the discrimination that prohibits the use of AI tools directed toward people suffering from disproportional inequalities in healthcare. Fulfilling gender equity in AI requires taking accountable AI strategies that deepen understanding of the mechanism of those in the margins and why they are in need of AI solutions designed for them. It is recommended that developers use gaps defined by surpassing inequality and discrimination based on identity markers—such as gender and race—and attempt to accomplish health equity by creating technologies that advance care devoid of bias for all patients.
