Innovative Approaches in Mental Health Intervention Using Wearable Devices
Abstract
This chapter looks into the application of smart technologies in dealing with various forms of mental illnesses. Portable technology optimizes treatment experiences through ease, customization, and enhanced options. For example, wearable technology collects real-time data on heart rate, sleep, physical activity, and social interaction to monitor the most important features of mental health. Support and feedback can be customized for every individual by analyzing these data. Smart technology facilitates one of the therapies called biofeedback that provides real-time information about emotions and stress so that users can learn how to control them better. Even cognitive-behavioral therapies are made smarter with smartphone reminders to perform cognitive retraining tasks or guided breathing exercises. Furthermore, groundbreaking therapies such as virtual reality exposure therapy for phobia and posttraumatic traumatic stress disorder patients are automated through wearable technology, allowing the creation of therapeutic environments that are safe but, at the same time, vividly immersive for exposure to anxiety triggers. Although smart technology grants unprecedented solutions for tailored and immediate mental healthcare, worries regarding privacy of information, incorporation into clinical settings, and acceptance from users pose significant challenges.
