Ensuring Responsible Data Use in Healthcare AI Applications
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI)–powered healthcare applications have the capability to enhance patient and workflow efficiency to unprecedented levels. However, responsible data governance remains a vital prerequisite for their acceptance. AI solutions for imaging diagnostics are transforming image interpretation for improved disease detection and treatment planning, yet the use of large-scale datasets for model training raises concerns pertaining to data privacy and discrimination. This research proposes a framework that addresses these challenges using data anonymization, bias reduction, and consent management strategies. It highlights the need for ongoing outlined transparency in the deployment of algorithms, particularly regarding continuous oversight to ensure ethical use of imaging data. AI facilitates increased efficiency in preoperative and postoperative patient care activities, as well as intraoperative decision-making. Regardless, integrating AI into surgical workflows requires extreme vigilance for data safety and patient privacy.
